Summer eye care, from spring sunshine to Term 1

Spring and summer bring more time outdoors, in the water and on the bike, a long school holiday and a new school year. Here is what is worth thinking about, in calendar order, with where to read more.

Nine things to sort before and during summer

September – November

Brighter days: protect your eyes from UV

UV still reaches your eyes on cloudy days. Sunglasses should carry a label showing they block 95–100% of UV — how dark the lenses are tells you nothing about protection. Close-fitting and wraparound styles let in less light around the edges, and a wide-brimmed hat helps too. UV damage is cumulative, so it is worth getting children into the habit early.

Spring, before summer

Ortho-K: nothing to wear in the water

Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight and taken out in the morning, so there are no glasses or daytime contact lenses to fog, slip or lose during sport, swimming or surfing. Most patients reach functional vision within one to two weeks, with best results typically after two to four weeks of nightly wear — so starting in spring leaves time to settle in. An assessment confirms whether Ortho-K suits your eyes; children as young as six can be fitted.

Summer riding: prescription cycling sunglasses

Everyday glasses can slip, fog or let the sun in on a long ride. Prescription cycling sunglasses put your prescription into a frame made to fit securely with a helmet, with lens choices such as tinted, polarised or photochromic, and options such as clip-in inserts and flip-ups.

Beach and pool: prescription swim goggles and dive masks

Off-the-shelf goggles have no prescription, and underwater everything already looks closer than it is. We make prescription swim goggles and dive masks, including for very high prescriptions. Fit matters as much as the lenses: goggles need to seal without squeezing, and a dive mask is best tried on.

New glasses before you go away

Our lenses are made by HOYA, and every pair comes with HOYA’s VP antireflective coating as standard. Browse the frame range, and see what a pair of glasses costs before you come in.

Sore, gritty eyes that won’t settle

Dry eye disease is a chronic condition: the tear film is poor quality, or there is not enough of it, causing sore, red eyes and blurred vision. Artificial tears ease the symptoms but do not fix the cause. A comprehensive dry eye evaluation identifies which type you have, so any treatment is matched to it.

Screens, time outdoors and short-sightedness

Research has not settled whether digital devices cause myopia, but reading too close, long screen sessions without breaks and too little time outdoors are all factors we look at. If your child’s distance vision is getting worse, myopia control options — including Ortho-K and specialised spectacle lenses — are designed to slow its progression.
