Ryan is the owner and principal optometrist at NVISION Eyecare®. He is an experienced optometrist with 18 years of experience as an optometrist in New Zealand. Ryan attended Palmerston North Boys High School before going on to study optometry at the University of Auckland. Ryan founded NVISION Eyecare in 2018 in the Apollo Health & Wellness centre to offer a unique eye care-focused optometry service that allows him to focus on his various interests like children's vision, contact lenses and dry eye.
Ryan is recognised internationally as an expert in the dry eye field, with publications in industry magazines and a peer-reviewed journal. He has also been appointed as the TFOS DEWS III Global Ambassador for New Zealand — a role that entrusts him to educate optometrists on the findings of the latest international DEWS III dry eye report, and he has given several talks to New Zealand and Australian optometrists about this.
As an expert in myopia control for children, he has been asked to give clinical updates to fellow optometrists and dispensing opticians. He utilises all available myopia control methods including Ortho-K contact lenses, eye drops, spectacles and red light therapy in his myopia management approach.
Specialty contact lens fitting is one of his main areas of expertise, where he utilises his skills across all specialties, including fitting scleral lenses for dry eye disease and Ortho-K lenses for myopia control. He also receives referrals to fit patients with corneal conditions — such as keratoconus, post-LASIK ectasia, and corneal grafts — using micro-corneal RGP and scleral contact lenses. NVISION Eyecare® is one of a few practices in the country that utilises 3D SMAP technology for ultra-customised scleral contact lens fitting.
Ryan is therapeutically endorsed to prescribe topical and oral medications for ocular eye conditions. He is an authorised glaucoma prescriber, which means that he is one of a limited number of optometrists in New Zealand that can prescribe medication to treat glaucoma. Ryan is also accredited with the Civil Aviation Authority to conduct eye exams for pilots.
Ryan is interested in using technology to improve eye care. He attends conferences, in New Zealand and overseas, to stay up to date with the latest technology. His passion for technology can be seen in the impressive technology provided at NVISION Eyecare®. Ryan is also the director of another company, OES Ltd, that specialises in research and development to develop state-of-the-art diagnostic testing equipment for optometrists.
Ryan is Married and has a two children. In his spare time, Ryan likes to read and follow Rugby and European football.
