Two different problems, two different treatments
Dry eye research has moved a long way in the past few years. Dry eye is now classified as a disease, and where once very little could be done for it, we now understand a great deal more about what causes it and how to treat it.
Tear deficiency
Where the eye simply does not produce enough tears, and normal artificial tears have been tried without success, punctal plugs are a more permanent option. They sit in the small drainage openings at the inner corners of the eyelids, holding on to the tears your eyes do produce.
Tear evaporation
Far more often the problem is evaporation, usually caused by meibomian gland dysfunction — the oil glands in the eyelids block, so the tear film breaks up too quickly. LipiFlow© is a scientifically proven treatment for MGD, and a single treatment has been shown to have a therapeutic effect lasting one to three years.
Which of these you have is not something you can tell from your symptoms, and it changes the treatment entirely. That is what the evaluation is for.
